Chennai braced for another night of heavy rainfall on Thursday as the city recorded 35 cm of precipitation in a 24-hour period, the highest single-day rainfall in a decade.

The Greater Chennai Corporation declared a holiday for schools and colleges, and the state government deployed 12 NDRF teams across waterlogged zones in Tambaram, Velachery, and Adyar.

Chief Minister MK Stalin reviewed the flood situation from the state emergency operations centre and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5,000 for flood-affected families.

Poondi and Red Hills reservoirs are at 95% capacity. The PWD has opened sluice gates to release excess water into the Cooum and Adyar rivers in a controlled manner.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Chennai and five neighbouring districts for the next 48 hours.
